STUDY QUESTIONS Locate and read about each hymn tune in C.S. Terry, Bach’s Chorals, v. 3 (PDF on CourseWork). How old is the hymn tune? what are its origins? does it belong to a season? what is its mood (of the poem and the tune)?
Sing or play the hymn tunes until you know them pretty well. What is each one’s most memorable or distinctive gestures? how are the phrases organized – are patterns repeated? what’s the melodic range? how many phrases are there, and how are they articulated?
